York County History Files




York county became a county in 1785. It covers 685 square miles.  Parts of Spartanburg.

A 1785 state law divided the old Camden District into seven counties, including Chester, Lancaster and York and named Yorkville as the county seat. The "ville" was dropped in 1915.

Union and York counties were used to create Cherokee County in 1897. The area was settled by emigrants from York, Pa.

Population (2004): 183,762
